All BMW I models and plug-in hybrids include eDrive, which consists of an electric motor, high-voltage lithium-ion battery, and an efficient energy management system.

The electric motor is what enables for completely zero-emissions driving — the X5 xDrive40e, for example, can go up to 30 kilometers without using any gasoline — as well as providing a boost to acceleration in specific conditions.

To store energy, all eDrive-equipped cars use a high-performance lithium-ion battery with a built-in cooling system to keep the unit at the proper operating temperature, allowing for increased output and longer service life.
