The male has a grayish blue head with a white crescent, a light brown body with a white patch near the rear and a black tail , the wings have a sky blue coverts, green speculum and yellow legs

The female is mottled brown , and has a whitish area at base of bill. the wings have a sky blue coverts, green speculum and yellow legs.

The call of the male is a short whistle , and the female call is a soft quack.

Blue-winged teal have the highest mortality rate reaching 65% of all dabbling ducks.

It is an early migratory bird. They are among the first birds to migrate south for the winter, and one of the last to migrate north in the spring. These ducks are quite sensitive to low temperatures.
