Savannah sparrows are brown above and white below, with a crisp streaks throughout. Their upper parts are brown and have a black streaks. Their under parts are white with thin brown or black streaks on the breast and flanks. They also have a small yellow patch on the face in front of the eye. Tail is short and notched. Legs and feet are pink.
After migration Savannah sparrows often return to the area where they hatched. They have strong nest site fidelity, Called natal philopatry.
Savannah sparrow are very adept at running and when they feel threatened will duck and dart away in grass rather than fly away.
Raising young is hard work . A female Savannah sparrow must gather 10 times her weight in food to feed herself and her young ones during the 8 days they are in the nest.
