On July 31, 1970, the British Royal Navy ended one of the longest-running military traditions in history—the daily rum ration known as "the tot."
For more than 300 years, Royal Navy sailors were issued a daily serving of rum to help boost morale during long voyages at sea. The tradition became a symbol of naval life and was passed down through generations of sailors.
As ships became more advanced and sailors were responsible for increasingly complex technology, naval leaders concluded that alcohol and modern warfare no longer mixed. On what became known as **Black Tot Day**, sailors wore black armbands, held mock funerals for the centuries-old tradition, and raised one final toast before the last official rum ration was served.
It marked the end of an era that had lasted since the 17th century.
