On July 24, 1983, one of the most controversial moments in Major League Baseball history unfolded at Yankee Stadium.
Kansas City Royals star George Brett appeared to hit a dramatic go-ahead two-run home run against the New York Yankees. But moments later, Yankees manager Billy Martin challenged the amount of pine tar on Brett's bat.
After measuring the bat, the umpires ruled Brett out, wiping the home run off the scoreboard. Brett's explosive reaction—charging from the dugout in disbelief—became one of the most iconic scenes in baseball history.
The controversy didn't end there. American League President Lee MacPhail later overturned the decision, reinstated the home run, and ordered the game to resume from the point of the disputed play. The Royals returned weeks later to finish the game and held on to win 5–4.
