On July 26, 2016, Solar Impulse 2 made aviation history by completing the first around-the-world flight powered entirely by the sun.
After 17 flight legs spanning more than 26,000 miles (43,000 km), the aircraft landed back in Abu Dhabi without using a single drop of conventional fuel. Instead, more than 17,000 solar cells powered its electric motors during the day while onboard batteries stored enough energy to keep flying through the night.
With a wingspan wider than a Boeing 747 but weighing about the same as a family car, Solar Impulse 2 proved that clean energy could accomplish what many thought was impossible.
