The panelists were: ACLU attorney Mark Fancher, community engagement specialist Sherita Smith, and former deputy Detroit mayor and police chief Dr. Isaiah McKinnon. The main takeaways were the following: 1.) The need for restorative justice practices in our schools; 2.) Discipline approaches where minor infractions are used as opportunities to help students make better choices; 3.) Listening to students who are acting out; 4.) Principals cannot run schools with suspension as the only form of discipline; and 5.) Demanding policy change in the funding of schools and prisons in this nation.$
