CBS was at the time far behind in the ratings and the ratings they had skewed heavily toward older audiences. But recently they had scored recent huge hits with Survivor (summer 2000) and CSI (fall 2000). This has CBS crowing about how they changed television and stating that tonight the next great show will premiere, Big Apple.
Big Apple was a cop drama in NYC, with Ed O'Neill as Mike Mooney, a cop who is so ornery that he doesn't even like the Feds! The show also had Michael Madsen and perpetual cop-portrayer, Donnie Wahlberg. The show was co-written and co-produced Anthony Yerkovich who had done the same for Miami Vice.
The show was not successful and only 8 episodes were produced.
I'm a big Ed O'Neill and it was a bummer to watch him fail repeatedly (including in cop shows such as this and Dragnet) between Married with Children and Modern Family.
