When you enter Pile Gate in the walled city of Old Town Dubrovnik, one of the first things you'll see is the 600 year-old Big Onofrio Fountain, designed by Naples architect Onofrio di Giordana della Cava, and built from 1438 to 1440. He also built an aqueduct leading into the fountain that was the main water source for the city until the end of the 19th century. A short walk on the Stradun brings you to Little Onofrio Fountain, which was completed after Big Onofrio Fountain. It supplied water to what was then the main marketplace of the city. Big Onofrio Fountain survived damage from the Earthquake of 1667 and Little Onofrio Fountain survived damage from the Croatian War of Independence in 1991. Both are architectural landmarks.
