The ALETSCH ARENA is one of the best resorts of Switzerland… even of the Alps! It’s an arena full of fantastic panoramas over the Aletsch Glacier, the greatest glacier of the Alps, the Matterhorn as well as the iconic trio Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. The Aletsch Arena also hosts one of the prettiest winter villages of Switzerland: BETTMERALP. All three stations Riederalp, Bettmeralp and Fiescheralp are car-free and thus great places for a relaxing holiday. Moreover the Aletsch Arena is very family friendly and also a great destination for people who do not ski. A ski pass costs around 55-60 CHF, which is very affordable for Swiss standards.
The Aletsch Arena is easy to reach: Either by car, they can be parked at Betten Talstation or by train, which directly stops at Betten station. Bettmeralp is the most popular destination to stay at, it's very family friendly and very pretty. It is often listed among the most beautiful villages of Switzerland, surely during Winter. Take the cabin ride up to the Bettmerhorn to enjoy a fantastic view over the Swiss Alps. The Matterhorn can be well seen on clear blue sky days. Very prominent in the Aletsch Arena is of course the Aletsch Glacier itself, which can be seen from the Bettmerhorn as well. There are many other view points at where you will get different impressions of the Aletsch Glacier. Bettmeralp is the largest station among all, but you should definitely visit the other two stations as well. Fiesch is very nice, especially when you go up to the Eggishorn, you will get the best panorama over the Aletsch Glacier, bernese Alps and the peaks of Valais. Riederalp is nice too but in general the least visited station. Over there you can get a nice view over the Aletsch glacier form the Moosfluh, Hohfluh and Riederfurka. You may also go for jumping on the matte to train yourself in doing tricks. The first jump is for free, subsequent jumps cost 2.- CHF. See the link below. How to choose: TICINO or Valais? Both cantons are nearby, they share some similarities but otherwise are very different from each other. Now where to travel to? Based on various categories and the advantages and disadvantages of either of the cantons, you will then know where to go to. Valais is French- and german-speaking, Ticino is Italian-speaking. Ticino is mostly warm and sunny during summer but also often dry. In Valais, it is also often sunny and hot but you easily can escape the heat by going higher up to villages above 1500 m. Valais has the higher mountains, you will still be able to see snow on the summits during Summer, while in Ticino, the mountains are lower in general. Ticino is a perfect place to go to swim in the nature and seeing waterfalls. You can do the same in Valais but there are less opportunities. The cuisine of Valais is known for its outstanding fondues and raclettes, while Ticino is mostly famous for its polenta and cold platters. In Valais you will dine often in a chalet, in Ticino at a Grotto. Ticino can be accessed from the Nufenen / Novena, Gotthard, Lucomagno or San Bernardino pass road during Summer, in Winter the only options are the tunnels at the Gotthard or San Bernardino. Valais can be reached from the west, north and east from Switzerland. Valais is in general easier accessible, during Summer there is a direct connection to Ticino but that one is not open during Winter. Ticino has 3 major cities – Lugano, Locarno and Bellinzona – with beautiful old centres, while in Valais the nice cities are Sion and Brig. In Brig there is a big castle, in Bellinzona there are 3 castles to be visited. Lugano and Locarno are by the lake, which is why these cities are charming as you can stroll along the lake promenade. In Ticino you furthermore can access the nearby summits to oversee the cities, in Valais this is not possible. Valais is famous for its glaciers, there are many of them that can be visited during all year, in Ticino there is only one glacier. Valais is great to be visited all year, Ticino is predominantly a Summer destination.
