Switzerland is one of the best countries in Europe to do a road trip. The grand tour takes you along many of Switzerland’s most scenic views and best attractions. One of the nicest parts is the road along the Furkapass from Andermatt to the Rhone Glacier down to the suspension Bridge in Goms. The serpet-like pass road takes you high up to the mountains, where you should consider a few stops to enjoy a great panorama. On the Furkapass itself, mostly you will be able to see the snowmountains, whose tips are still covered during summer. Just a few minutes further down you will arrive at the Rhone Glacier, where the main attraction of this trip awaits you. A few hundred meters from the parking lot lays the magical ice cave inside the Rhone Glacier. What is really amazing about this cave is that you will be standing inside natural ice! However, this wonderful attraction is under threat: Global warming has caused much harm to this glacier, which resulted in an ongoing loss of mass and retreat up to the mountains. Only 100 years ago, the glacier was 1000 meters longer! When I was a kid, the glacier still ranged above the edge, but now in 2019, the glacier is receeded much higher up, leaving behind a lake that should not exist. Thanks to modern technology, parts of the glacier, where the cave is craved into, are covered with UV absorbing blankets, that reduced the melting of the ice by 70%. When visiting this place, it is a good moment to reflect our own behavior and make us think, what we all can do to prevent global warming from getting worse. Next to the Glacier stands this old hotel, which nowadays remains closed, but once used to host many guests who came here to enjoy the massive glacier ranging down far into the valley. It was also shown in James Bond 007 Goldfinger; which has attracted many tourists since. When driving further down into the valley, after roughly 45 minutes, you will arrive in Mühlebach-Fürgangen, where the new instahype “Goms Bridge” stretches above the canyon. It still remains free to visit, which is the reason, why you should consider coming here. Remember! Switzerland is best to visit in early June or after mid-August, as summer is on, but the mass tourism is not.

![Ticino OR Valais SWITZERLAND: Where to travel? [Full Guide]
How to choose: TICINO or Valais? Both cantons are nearby, they share some similarities but otherwise are very different from each other. Now where to travel to? Based on various categories and the advantages and disadvantages of either of the cantons, you will then know where to go to. Valais is French- and german-speaking, Ticino is Italian-speaking. Ticino is mostly warm and sunny during summer but also often dry. In Valais, it is also often sunny and hot but you easily can escape the heat by going higher up to villages above 1500 m. Valais has the higher mountains, you will still be able to see snow on the summits during Summer, while in Ticino, the mountains are lower in general. Ticino is a perfect place to go to swim in the nature and seeing waterfalls. You can do the same in Valais but there are less opportunities. The cuisine of Valais is known for its outstanding fondues and raclettes, while Ticino is mostly famous for its polenta and cold platters. In Valais you will dine often in a chalet, in Ticino at a Grotto. Ticino can be accessed from the Nufenen / Novena, Gotthard, Lucomagno or San Bernardino pass road during Summer, in Winter the only options are the tunnels at the Gotthard or San Bernardino. Valais can be reached from the west, north and east from Switzerland. Valais is in general easier accessible, during Summer there is a direct connection to Ticino but that one is not open during Winter. Ticino has 3 major cities – Lugano, Locarno and Bellinzona – with beautiful old centres, while in Valais the nice cities are Sion and Brig. In Brig there is a big castle, in Bellinzona there are 3 castles to be visited. Lugano and Locarno are by the lake, which is why these cities are charming as you can stroll along the lake promenade. In Ticino you furthermore can access the nearby summits to oversee the cities, in Valais this is not possible. Valais is famous for its glaciers, there are many of them that can be visited during all year, in Ticino there is only one glacier. Valais is great to be visited all year, Ticino is predominantly a Summer destination.
