Belugas and dolphins rescued from closed Canadian park arrive in Spain
Two beluga whales and four dolphins rescued from a Canadian marine park that closed more than a year ago arrived at Valencia's Oceanografic aquarium in eastern Spain as part of an international effort to relocate the animals and avoid their euthanasia, the aquarium said on Thursday (August 27). The six female animals, two belugas named Cleopatra and Jelly Bean and four dolphins named Tsunami, Lida, Echo and Marina, were flown from Toronto to Valencia on a specially chartered seven-hour flight before being transported by road to the aquarium.
Veterinary and animal care teams from the Spanish aquarium travelled to Canada in recent months to assess the animals' health and prepare the transfer, which involved coordination with authorities in Canada, the United States and Spain. The six animals will remain in non-public areas while staff monitor their health, feeding habits and behaviour as they adapt to their new surroundings, the aquarium said
