POV: you're a little girl. It's the 1850s. You live in the British Museum. And you're obsessed with your pet cat, Mouton.

Alt text: this reel shows a sketchbook unearthed in our collection and very recently digitised. The book belonged to a little girl called Emily Madden who lived at the British Museum. It's fair to say Emily’s illustrations rival Beatrix Potter and EH Shepard. Whether that’s epic battles led by General Mouton, or Mouton eating boiled eggs with his hedgehog friend and arresting baddies. The final pages include a pencil lament about Mouton’s death and the pages are stained with tears, presumably Emily’s.
