Your nose hair may seem like nothing more than an annoying grooming problem, but it actually plays an important role every time you breathe. In this video, Dr. Alan Mandell explains how the hairs inside your nose work together with mucus and tiny structures called cilia to help trap dust, pollen, pollution, and other airborne particles before they travel deeper into your respiratory system. Your nasal passages also help warm, humidify, and filter the air you breathe, which is one reason nasal breathing is so important. Does this mean you should never groom your nose hair? Absolutely not. Visible hairs can be carefully trimmed to keep them neat and presentable—the important thing is understanding why you don't necessarily want to eliminate the hairs deeper inside your nose. Before the next time you reach for your nose-hair trimmer, watch this and learn what those little hairs are actually doing with every breath you take.
