After the storms of the first movement, Beethoven gives us an episode of pure, lyrical respite. This piece is structured as a series of variations on a theme that Beethoven reportedly worked hard to get just right, and this is evident in how elaborate it really is; not a single note is out of place here.
Separating each of the variations is an interlude of confident, optimistic character (the first of these begins at 0:46).
After the last variation (5:34), which is also the only one in a minor key, comes a grand, final statement of the main theme in its original form (6:10).
The coda starts out surprisingly playful and light-hearted (6:52), although not for too long.
Near its end, Beethoven gives us a gorgeous, warm-hearted variant of the main theme's last phrase (7:25-7:41) and the movement ends shortly after.
