Beethoven's common and trailblazing replacement of the Minuet for the Scherzo wasn't immediate, and here we can see an example of that; this is the only one of Beethoven's first three Piano Trios to feature a Minuet instead of a Scherzo.
This Minuet is a perfect combination of the stern and the elegant. The Trio section brings temporary relief with noticeably more light-hearted material (1:30), after which an abbreviated reprise of the Minuet proceeds to end the movement (2:44).
