In the third movement of this symphony, we get a rare, special sight: an old-fashioned Minuet instead of a Scherzo (the much faster variant that had already been developed and popularized by Beethoven) in a Romantic-era symphony. This one remains particularly gentle and pleasant throughout.
The contrasting Trio (2:16) features a characteristic, fanfare-like figure first played by horn and bassoon. After the main Minuet section has returned (3:54) and is repeated in full, it seems like we'll hear the Trio again as well (5:45), but it's only a trick; the movement ends soon after that.
