In the second movement of this Piano Trio, we find a short and sweet example of one of Mendelssohn's specialties: a "song without words" of beautiful simplicity. Its middle section strikes a markedly more dramatic note (1:48), though without mitigating the lovely impression that this movement brings overall. When the original "song without words" comes back (3:24), almost every detail of its instrumentation is carefully and delightfully rearranged.
