This amazing view of the Earth was captured by the GOES 16 (Geostationary Satellite) east imager and shows most of the western hemisphere in remarkable detail. Since night time on Earth is much less visible (to the human eye) from space without the sun's illumination, the night view is composited using two infrared bands (7 and 13) to show atmospheric water and ice (in clouds), along with a static ground map of city lights to yeild more-or-less consistent view from day to night.
These 800+ images (courtesy of the NOAA GOES image server) were captured over a 10-day period at 15-minute intervals, then built into the timelapse you see here.
