Zero gap welding requires clamping that handles:
• Changes in cell and busbar positioning
• Changes in battery module design
• Different modules assembled with the same solution
Without these adaptations, there will be quality problems or production will be slowed down by clamping adjustments. There are two general approaches to clamping for battery welding:
• Dynamic clamping
• Clamping plates
Static clamping plates limit the available space for the clamping apparatus, whereas dynamic clamping tools can be larger than the cells being welded. This allows additional components to be attached to the fixture, making it easier to accommodate cell-to-cell variations.
By using robots, additional space is available for:
• A fume extraction nozzle mounted on the robot arms
• An air blower to redirect contaminants
• A shielding gas supplied directly to the welding zone
