Phosphate coating is removed from these pinions and ring gears to improve mechanical properties before the assembly. The process leaves the metal underneath unaffected and helps create a stronger assembly.

Laser marking is also used to add permanent data matrix codes. The pinion is engraved using a phosphate-resistant technology. This process ensures that the code remains readable through phosphating. Regarding the ring gear, a data matrix code is quickly etched on its surface. Ring gears can also be laser annealed if the surface must not be ablated.
