The hairpins, which are made of copper, are insulated with a coating that needs to be removed before welding. Typical insulating coatings that can be removed by laser stripping include polyamide-imides (PAI), polyether ether ketone (PEEK), and polyamide-imides with polyimide foil (PAI+FEP).
Laser stripping is used to remove the insulating coating from the areas on the edge of the hairpins, which is where the hairpin will be welded to another hairpin in the stator assembly. The laser is carefully calibrated to vaporize the insulation without damaging the copper wire underneath. This leaves the bare wire exposed and ensures that the coating does not penetrate and contaminate the welds during welding.

Once coated, the turbine housing will be used as part of a turbocharger (turbo).
