Showcasing a Work-in-Progress (WIP) look at my Batman: The Animated Series MUGEN project, featuring AI vs. AI Watch Mode fights!
Batman: The Animated Series from the 1990s was my absolute favorite cartoon growing up as a kid, which is why I’d wanted to complete the MUGEN game for it.
The Backstory & The Lost 2020 Build:
Back in 2020, I manually built a BTAS MUGEN from scratch using Notepad++ and available assets (similar to my old Sailor Moon and Marvel vs. DC builds from 2016-2022). It had a fully finished Arcade mode and included all the classic SNES game stages with their music mapped to the correct characters. Sadly, I wasn't happy with how the messy UI/Menus looked, and I eventually deleted the build in 2022 and took it off ModDB due to copyright worries over the SNES assets.
The New 2025/2026 Build:
Last year (around June/July 2025), a subscriber asked for my old build. Since it was lost, I decided to restart the project. This time, I found an official alpha release on the MUGEN Archive. The original creator had abandoned the project but left it open for anyone to continue.
Unlike my 2020 version, this alpha has a 100% style-accurate UI/Screenpack and includes true BTAS-style sprites for Robin, Catwoman, Two-Face, and Clayface (whereas my old version used mismatched or poorly scaled sprites).
What I've Changed & Current Status:
Using this official alpha as a base, I learned how to add new characters to the roster while keeping the clean UI intact. I've added at least three characters to this build, including Poison Ivy.
Unfortunately, because the old download sites are dead, I lost access to the SNES stages and music I used in 2020, so a few of the fights in this video don't have background music yet. Shortly after doing this, I pivoted to releasing content for a World of Warcraft MUGEN that re-appeared out of pure luck, a lost 2010 build, so this BTAS build remains an unfinished WIP to this day.
While the official base alpha is on the MUGEN Archive, this customized build is slightly updated. Sit back and enjoy these AI vs. AI test fights!
