For millions of Americans experiencing homelessness or living in transitional housing, those essentials can be difficult to access.
At the Vessel Convening in Washington, D.C., Kory Russell, an assistant professor at the University of Oregon, joined advocates on Capitol Hill to highlight a growing challenge often overlooked in national water policy: ensuring WASH (water, sanitation, and hygiene) services reach people who are unhoused and living in transitional situations.
Russell says the issue affects communities across both the East and West coasts and requires solutions that go beyond traditional infrastructure planning. Expanding access to safe sanitation, handwashing facilities, and reliable water services can improve public health, dignity, and quality of life for some of the country's most vulnerable residents.
