One of Amazon's water conservation projects starts with leaks.
Will Hewes, Water Sustainability Lead for Amazon, highlighted a partnership with ION Water that uses cloud-connected monitoring technology to identify hidden water waste inside affordable housing developments in Northern Virginia, home to one of the world's largest concentrations of data centers.
The system can detect issues such as leaking toilets and other anomalies, automatically alerting property managers so repairs can be made before water losses escalate.
The concept is simple: monitor water use in real time, find problems faster, and fix them sooner.
According to Hewes, projects using the technology have achieved water savings of 50% or more. Amazon and ION Water are deploying the approach across approximately 1,600 affordable housing units, with expected savings of about 45 million gallons of water per year.
As communities across Northern Virginia grapple with growing water demands, the project highlights how conservation and efficiency can help stretch existing supplies before new sources are needed.
