The Starbrite aluminum cleaner restorer is tested and reviewed in this video. I have no affiliation with this company and paid for it myself. I found it very useful and rated it 95/100 because it takes most of the barnacles. I had the same barnacle problem the year before, and it took me every night during almost 2 weeks to sand them down, which is tricky when you don’t want to sand your aluminum hull. Dissolving the barnacles was done in less than 2 hours with rinsing of water and eliminating any traces of acid.

Important:
If you have a trailer of galvanized steel, then cover it before applying this product. It may not show in the video, and it doesn’t say on the bottle, that the zinc in your galvanized steel trailer reacts with the sulphuric acid in the Starbrite.
Therefore, cover the trailer and make sure you rinse off all acid everywhere, and to best do that on your hull you may want to put your boat in the water to make sure every cavity, or channel, under your boat, is rinsed off and neutralized.
- Do I believe there is something unique with this product compared to other etching acids? No, I don’t. Typically Oxalic acid, Sulphuric acid, and others are used in combinations with salts to enhance their performance at somewhat lower acidity. Surfactants are also included to better spread on the metal, or assist in the formation of a foam that can hold and stick to your surface for a while. However, for the price you pay, which was 30 dollars / 30 euros, there is not really any point in trying to mix up your own solution unless you wish to investigate that in itself.
