This video begins with some scenes in Dhaka on the way to Sadraghat Dhaka ferry terminal on the Buriganga river. Tricycle rickshaws are everywhere. There are estimated to be over 600,00 in Dhaka alone. They are a very cheap form of short distance transport. For longer and faster urban journeys the usually green painted CNGs (Compressed Natural Gas) are ideal. A ride in one of these highly manoeuvrable three wheelers can be an exciting experience.
Because of its many rivers, (over 800) water transportation is an important means of communication in Bangladesh. Sadraghat ferry terminal has frequent departures to many parts of the country. These large launches have very cheap third class accommodation as well as comfortable first class cabins for overnight journeys. Food and soft drinks are always available.
Small wooden dingis propelled by a single paddle are used for local water transport. Not far from Sadraghat on the opposite bank of the Buriganga river there is one of many shipbuilding yards. These use material recovered from the ships broken up at Chittagong.
As well as the modern launches some old paddle steamers are still in service. Some built as long ago as 1929 by Garden River Workshops, Calcutta. They were renovated and converted to diesel power in the 1990s. The top deck has a first class dining saloon cum lounge overlooking the foredeck. It is flanked on each side by the cabins, with access to the side promenade decks. Third class including a snack bar is on the lower deck. There is cargo space below.
