Tldr; You can absolutely enjoy your banana berry smoothies! The main type of polyphenol in berries is not as readily broken down by the polyphenol oxidase enzyme in bananas, compared to the type of polyphenols used in the study. Plus, polyphenol oxidase doesn’t affect protein, fiber, healthy fats, vitamins or minerals, so all of the other valuable nutrients in your smoothie are safe! And the study that this myth is based on showed that, as long as you consume the smoothie fairly soon after blending, the worst case scenario is only losing half of the polyphenols (if you were blending banana with something like green tea, which is high in the polyphenols the study actually looked at, called catechins and epicatechins). So, no worries!
