Ballindalloch Distillery, nestled in the heart of Speyside, is celebrated as one of Scotland’s first single estate distilleries. Established in 2014 by the Macpherson-Grant family—who have called the Ballindalloch Estate home since 1546—the distillery stands out for its dedication to traditional whisky-making and a strong focus on quality over quantity.
What makes Ballindalloch unique is its single estate approach: all the barley used in production is grown exclusively on the estate, allowing complete control over the grain’s quality and character. Staying true to time-honored techniques, the distillery operates without any computer automation, relying instead on the skill and experience of its team. Whisky is distilled using copper pot stills and matured in carefully chosen oak casks to create rich, complex flavors.
Sustainability is also a key part of the operation. The barley grown on-site not only fuels the whisky-making process, but the leftover draff is used to feed the estate’s prize-winning Aberdeen Angus cattle—closing the loop in an eco-friendly and efficient way.
Though Ballindalloch is among Scotland’s newest whisky distilleries, its story is deeply rooted in history. The distillery sits within the grounds of Ballindalloch Castle, built in 1546, and still home to the Macpherson-Grant family. Interestingly, the family's involvement in Scotch whisky dates back to the 19th century. In 1869, Sir George Macpherson-Grant leased part of the estate to distiller John Smith, who used it to build the now-famous Cragganmore Distillery. After Smith’s death in 1923, the family became joint owners of Cragganmore with White Horse Distillers and remained involved well into the 20th century, eventually selling their share to DCL in 1965.
Nearly five decades later, in 2011, the Macpherson-Grants returned to whisky. Guy Macpherson-Grant, the 23rd generation of the family and current resident of Ballindalloch Castle, began converting a 19th-century farm steading into a new malt whisky distillery. Official production began in late 2014, marking a full-circle moment for the family.
Today, Ballindalloch proudly hails itself as "Scotland’s first single estate distillery," combining heritage, craftsmanship, and sustainability in every bottle.
