I've been thinking of taking on some kind of musical instrument while backpacking. At first I was considering the the harmonica. The last time I played was during Cub Scouts. It would be nice to learn something other than Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. Harmonicas are pretty loud though.
Then I looked into Otamatone instruments from Japan. It sounds like a Theremin but in a small form factor. Neat but it sounds like a Theramin and that can get annoying quick.
Then I saw a Kalimba in some videos. Figured I'd give it try. The sound isn't harsh. I like the compact size compared to like a ukulele. It looks easy to pick up since the form factor is similar to a game controller.
So I grabbed a cheap 17 key Kalimba during Black Friday sales for myself and gifts.
I'd rather be backpacking with it now but my right arm is still healing from a horrible poison oak rash. Sorry about the plane but it was circling all morning. :D
