"Bacchic" is an ecstatic melody dedicated to Bacchus and his cult of followers. The song is an on-spot improvisation by two masters of ancient musical instruments, Theodore Koumartzis on a LUTHIEROS lyre and Yannis Pantazis on a double syrinx.
The cult of Bacchus was a mystery religion; most of its aspects were kept hidden and eventually got lost throughout the centuries. The main reason behind this is that Bacchus, also known as Dionysus, was a controversial god for Greek mythology, protecting both fertility and ritual ecstasy/insanity. His followers, called Bacchoi, proclaimed to be holy (or mystics) after cleansing themselves through initiation at the Eleusinian Mysteries.
The video session took place inside Symposion, a unique cultural center at the heart of the island of Santorini, Greece.

🎙️ Who is Theodore?
Theodore is the youngest brother of the Koumartzis family. Being part of the family's endeavor since its early stage, he soon came to be an inspiring top-notch lyre player, constantly learning and experimenting with musicians around the world.
He is the founder of the PAUSIS Project, a curator at the SEIKILO Museum of Ancient Music in Greece (Thessaloniki), and an integral part of LUTHIEROS Music Instruments.
🎙️ Who is Yannis?
Yannis Pantazis is a highly skilled ancient wind instrument player, performing on the aulos, the diaulos, the askaulos, et cetera. He is permanently staying in Santorini, Greece, where he runs (along with Argy Kakissis) Symposion Cultural Centre (an initiative that began as "La Ponta" back in 2012).
Since then, Symposion events are influenced by Greek mythology's timeless relevance to life as it is lived today. Inspired by the nine Muses, Symposion offers guests a unique experience through interactive tours, workshops, vintage instrument exhibitions, and original performances. Symposion’s programming caters to adults and children, the local community, and global travelers alike.
