She was a goddess, the offspring of gods. — Antigone (Sophocles)

Which law is greater? That of the Gods or the law of the men?
Discover the essence of Sophocles' Antigone and the eternal inquiries that ancient Greek writers explored in their tragedies with Evangelia Thalassini, a researcher and performer of ancient theatrical plays.
In this Kommos (lines 823-837, Antistrophe A & Chorus), Antigone battles the Elders of her city, a struggle between an unbound young mind against the unbending wisdom of the men at the very end of their life.

🎭 What is a Kommos for the ancient Greeks?
A kommos (from Greek κομμός, kommós, literally "striking", "beating of the head and breast in mourning") is a lyrical song of lamentation in an Athenian tragedy that the chorus and a dramatic character sing together. A kommos occurs "when the tension of the play rises to a climax of grief or horror or joy".

🎙️ Who is Evangelia?
Εvangelia Thalassini has done extensive theatrical studies such as Theatre Acting at the “Veaki Drama School” in Athens, and Stage Direction at the “Royal Superior Academy of Drama” (RESAD) in Madrid. She holds a Master's degree in “Stage Arts Composition” at the University “Rey Juan Carlos” in Madrid.
She has directed several theatrical plays in Greece and Spain, and since 2015 she has been involved exclusively in presenting tragedies in ancient Greek at archaeological museums and sites in Greece, such as Sophocles' “Antigone".
What's more, she has been researching the musicality of the speech in ancient texts, the relation of the triptych “Music – Speech – Movement”, and the rhythm of prosody (alternation of long and sort syllabus).
She has extensive experience in teaching the rhythms of ancient Greek poetry.
