The curandero don Enrique leads a traditional ayahuasca ceremony during the Ayahuasca Foundation's Curandero Initiation Course in 2010. The songs sung by curanderos in ayahuasca ceremonies, called icaros, play an important role in the healing process. With the icaros, the curandero calls to the spirits of the plants, animals, ancestors, even extraterrestrials to assist with diagnosing affliction and finding the proper treatments to heal the patients completely. Tobacco also plays an important role, as the curandero smokes a type of tobacco known as 'mapacho' to enhance their connection with the spirits.
