The first records mentioning the town of Axum, now in Ethiopia, are around 4,700 years old. Immigrants from southern Arabia founded the town at the crossroads of important trade routes between India, Africa and the Mediterranean. Axum must have been a water-rich, fertile place back then, because the name means “The Well of the Princes”. Today Axsum is the historical and religious center of Ethiopia, famous above all for its steles, which are up to 30 meters high. They are each carved from a single piece of granite and probably crowned graves. How the blanks, some of which weighed 500 tons, were transported over many kilometers is still a mystery. Rüdiger Lorenz introduces Axum and its history.
