The first Heron in the series has their go through the gauntlet. Rafiel is the epitome of outlier stats. He has the highest Magic and Res stats out of anyone in the series, but because he is locked to the Heron class who can only use Daemon Cards, he obviously struggles quite a bit. He has solid HP to help him weather the storm, but the 48 Speed and 32 Defense completely blows that strategy out of the water, opening him up to be one-shot before he even gets a shot at counterattacking. However, if Rafiel can live a round of combat or if he out-speeds you, you better have a good Res stat, because he does a boatload of damage with the Daemon Card. From the top of my head, he can two-shot just about everyone in the series besides Micaiah, Leanne, and maybe a few others, and has the ability to one-shot at the very least a third of the cast if he gets the opportunity! Another quirk that helps Rafiel out a little bit, is that in the game code, he technically doesn't count as a laguz unit since he is stuck to the ground. So, any effective weapons do not work on him because of this. Obviously it doesn't really matter against the physical units who will just two-shot him with SS weapons or quad-hit him with the Brave Weapons, but against the magic units, he has a solid advantage against them since they are unable to use Rexcalibur for effective damage like they can against the other herons. All that they can hope for is a mastery skill to proc once or twice, or in some other cases, use their staves to damage him that way instead.

The unit with the higher base speed will initiate first. (If unit has Shade or Stillness they will always choose who goes first). If both units have the same speed, the unit whose video it is will go first.
For weapons, the unit who is faster chooses the weapon they want the unit they are attacking gets to choose a weapon to counter them with. The unit who attacks first, goes through all the possible weapon combinations and picks whatever situation would give them the best chance at victory. After the initial turn, the only time a unit can change their weapon is on their turn.
