There's too many places to list in the Pacific Northwest that provide some excellent scenic train watching opportunities, but one of my favorites is closer to Seattle than one might think. The BNSF Seattle Sub runs between Seattle and Vancouver, WA and usually has a healthy amount of both freight and passenger train traffic. There's also many different scenic settings along the line, but the highlight for me is the section between Nisqually and Tacoma.
Running along the shore of the Puget Sound, this section of the Seattle Sub near Point Defiance never disappoints! In particular, Fall in the Pacific Northwest adds even more beauty to an already scenic setting. In this video, you'll see BNSF, Union Pacific, and Amtrak trains along this section of the Seattle Sub back in Fall of 2019. In addition, there's also the Series IV (6) Talgo sets featured, all of which have since been retired.
In the coming months, the Amtrak trains will also be eventually re-routed to the Point Defiance Bypass line, also known as the Sound Transit Lakewood Subdivision. Running between Tacoma Dome and Nisqually Junction, Amtrak trains will completely bypass the shoreline route, and instead follow the path of factories in the Lakewood and Tacoma areas of the South Sound.
