Indonesian, the official and national language of Indonesia, is a standardized variety of Malay and has long served as a lingua franca in the multilingual Indonesian archipelago. Indonesia, the fourth most populous country globally, has over 279 million people, the majority of whom speak Indonesian, making it one of the world's most widely spoken languages.
Madurese is a language spoken by the Madurese people, primarily on Madura Island and Eastern Java in Indonesia. Migrants also speak it in other parts of Indonesia, including the eastern part of Java, the Masalembu Islands, and some areas of Kalimantan. While traditionally written in the Javanese script, it is now more commonly written in the Latin and Pegon scripts. The language has 10-13 million speakers, making it one of Indonesia's most widely spoken languages. Madurese belongs to the Malayo-Sumbawan subgroup of the Malayo-Polynesian language family, part of the larger Austronesian family, and is more closely related to languages like Balinese, Malay, Sasak, and Sundanese than to Javanese.
