Football has been a Thanksgiving tradition in Texas since 1893, when the first organized games were played in the state. Games, plural. The newly formed University of Texas Longhorns shocked the Dallas Athletic Club in one, defeating the self-proclaimed "Champions of Texas" 18–16 at Fair Park. Sixty miles away in Sherman, Austin College cadets hosted the Dallas YMCA team. An unresolved dispute led referees to end the game just before halftime, with Austin College winning 16–4. The university officially started its football program three years later. This silent footage shows the Austin College Kangaroos' 1954 homecoming game.
