KULT News made two visits to über-liberal Berkeley, California in August and September 2024 to see how they felt about the free press. We weren’t terribly surprised by what we found but we were deeply disappointed by the Berkeley Police Department’s response to our request for public records.

Laws may vary but, generally speaking, in the United States, if you are in public you are legally able to photograph whatever you can see. Simply put, your eyes can’t be trespassed. Obviously there are some restrictions on this (i.e., bathrooms, dressing rooms, most courtrooms, locker rooms, etc.) but very few when you are in public. If you can see it, you can shoot it (this rule only applies to cameras.) This is not legal advice.
