Astronaut Neil Armstrong taxies on the runway, takes off vertically, hovers, flies, and lands vertically in the Bell X-14A experimental X-plane at NASA's Ames Research Center. Armstrong flew the aircraft, which had a flight control system similar to that which would be used on the Lunar Module, as a simulation of a lunar landing. Note the open cockpit of this X-plane during this silent film footage. Credit: NASA/NARA
