The plane departed Seoul at 14:37 local time and was scheduled to arrive in Mokpo at 15:15. The flight planned to land on runway 06 at Mokpo Airport. Weather conditions at Mokpo was poor with low clouds, heavy rain falls and strong winds. A first attempt to land at 15:24 was abandoned as well as a second at 15:28 as the crew was unable to establish a visual contact with the runway.
At 15:38, a third attempt to land was made under VOR/DME mode. The plane then disappeared from radar at 15:41. At 15:48 the plane struck the wooded ridge of Mount Ungeo, located about 7ยฝ km short of the runway 06 threshold, at an altitude of 800 feet. Both pilots and 66 passengers were killed while 48 other occupants were injured.

The crew took the decision to continue the approach in below weather minima until the aircraft impacted ground, resulting in a controlled flight into terrain. Poor weather conditions, limited visibility, poor crew monitoring and wrong approach configuration were considered as contributing factors.
