Ashokan Farewell is a very famous fiddle tune composed by Jay Ungar iN the 1980s. The tune was used in "The Civil War" documentary by Ken Burns, and was also the ending tune played at the Ashokan fiddle camp. The tune is extremely popular in the United States and is even frequently recognized by people who don't necessarily follow folk music.
I've been able to play this tune at pretty much every session I've been in, and almost everyone joins in -- it's definitely a good one to learn. It's also a very pretty tune, and there are many different ornamental ideas that you can do to really make the tune stand out -- it also sounds great as a solo!
