Michels Construction, Inc. is serving as a subcontractor on the Ashland Water Utility New Water Intake Project to install 4,500 linear feet of 24-inch intake pipe further offshore in Chequamegon Bay in Lake Superior to improve raw water quality for the city.
Michels Marine is supplying a four-person dive team and equipment to assist Roen Salvage with assembling the new water intake components along the lakebed. The project began in June 2025 and is expected to be completed in October 2025.
The dive team measured elevation changes along the lakebed prior to the installation of each pipe section. After placing the new pipe, the diver measured elevation once again to ensure the pipe lay flat along the lakebed. Crews maintained low turbidity throughout the project, decreasing the project's environmental impact.
