Munch originally called this painting "After the Fall": he shows us a modern version of Adam and Eve after they have been expelled from paradise. "Ashes" was painted in 1894 and now hangs in the National Gallery in Oslo. The painting deals with one of Munch's recurring themes, the problematic relationship between man and woman and the mystery of sexuality.
