Any tinder (cotton fabric, straw, pine needles, etc) that you thoroughly saturate with any kind of wood ashes will turn that tinder into an amazing coal extender. I call this technique, Ashed Tinder. Ashed Tinder can be used like any other coal extender.
Coal extenders will easily catch weak ignition sources and allow them to linger and maintain until you’re ready to aerate it into a hot enough ember and ignite your tinder bundle.
