One of the many amazing things about goats is that a mother can find her kids in a field full of babies. She knows them in a number of ways, including their unique voice, smell, and how they look. Most goat mothers will not let a kid that is not theirs nurse. (Abby and Honeysuckle sometimes do if the kids are sneaky!) this makes sense because they only have so much milk and if they fed all the babies, they wouldn’t have enough to keep their kids healthy. But today, during morning playtime, all the moms left Ginger alone with the 10 babies! Since hers are so new, she was a little more nervous to leave them to go out back the barn and graze! Sweet lady! The difference between the oldest who is almost 2 weeks and the littlest who are just a day old is huge! The wee ones roam the barn looking for milk, the bigger kids just want to hop. We keep the kids separate from the herd for the first couple weeks so they can learn to find their mom in a smaller group. I think they like the safety of staying close to the barn.
