"Your brain may not remember, but your body will never forget that animals have guarded us since the Stone Age." —Running with Sherman, Christopher McDougall
An animal’s trust is a sacred gift, a gentle invitation to be our most human and connected self.
The moment I met our owner surrendered donkeys, they looked like family to me. Their eyes were full of a trust I was eager to earn.
And today the most beautiful thing happened. After less than a week here, the donkeys finally lay down in the sun. Vegas let me lay next to him, even rested his head on me. Truly it felt like a sweet blessing, the Spring sun, the relaxed heavy head on my shoulder, green grass working its way to the soil’s surface all around.
And in the barn, our goat Thistle is due to kid. And she will share her kids with hundreds of farm visitors over the weeks to come. And you too will feel the beauty of that trust and connection.
We open the farm to visitors so that everyone who comes can feel those connections to our ancient simpler selves. We hope for minute you can let the complicated world go. We hope when a goat or donkey leans into you, your hands on their warm coat, newly remembered electrical connections fill your body with warm golden light, illuminating the ever present gift of how lucky we are to be alive.
I will never forget today.
