Today was one of those slow chore days, a calm before the snowstorm, when I could soak up each of the animals and enjoy taking my time.
I usually wait to post to YouTube until the babies begin arriving in April, but this year, I thought it might be fun to pop on now and then and take you along to do chores. A little Love Note from the Goats!
Our first snow storm is due tomorrow.
When faced with challenging times, we are often inclined to hunker down, batten down the hatches, stockpile resources and create a smaller circle of dependence. I’ve been thinking a lot recently about how much we can learn from goats. They are herd animals who depend on each other. Time and time again I am reminded that we too need each other!
When we look at how most humans survive challenges like war or storms or sickness, times when everything is stripped away and we are left with our raw humanity, it is almost always through connection to a greater community circle. We survive by widening our reach, sharing what we can, opening our hearts.
The world feels way less scary and unpredictable if we operate in this way before a crisis demands it of us.
I don’t have much to offer you, my dear community, but I can offer goats! And the way the morning sunlight captures hay dust, holds it suspended for moment. And the distinct voice of each goat: silly, demanding, sweet. And a barn cat making sense of a chicken. And Sunshine on the last green grass, and steaming buckets of water, and the flirtation of goats —a promise of baby goats to come.
