Are sunglasses actually bad for you? A viral claim says they make sunburn worse — here's what the science really shows. 👇A health professional recently claimed sunglasses trick the brain into thinking it's dark outside, leading to worse sunburn. The idea isn't completely baseless — there are mouse studies linking UV light entering the eye to melanin-related skin changes. But mouse eyes and human eyes are fundamentally different, and we have no strong clinical evidence this translates to people. What we DO have is robust evidence that UV exposure harms your eyes. Eye doctors recommend UV-blocking sunglasses to reduce your risk of:☀️ Photokeratitis (UV sunburn of the eye)
☀️ Pinguecula & Pterygium (eye surface growths)
☀️ Eyelid skin cancer
☀️ Cataracts
☀️ UV-related macular degeneration riskThe bottom line: sunglasses are NOT bad for you — they're one of the most important tools for long-term eye health. If you dislike wearing them, at minimum use a wide-brimmed hat during peak UV hours.Your eyes need sun protection too. 👁️☀️
