Ever seen an eye wash cup before? 🤔 Eye cups used to be a major part of first aid for eyes. While this eye care tool can be used at home for a quick eye wash, it has become less used in clinics because of risk for contamination and spreading infection.
How to use eye wash cup
The eye wash cup is used by filling a clean eye cup with sterile saline solution or eye wash solution. You then place it on the eye socket firmly and tilt the head back. The saline solution will bath the eye and while moving the eye in different directions, the solution can help remove debri, allergens and other things trapped under the eyelids,
The head is returned to a lower position and the eye cup is then removed.
Disposable plastic eye cups are sometimes used but re-usable glass eye cups like the one I show here should be cleaned and sterilized before and after each use.
Some people use eye wash cups in ayurvedic medicine. It is sometimes promoted or seen online as a natural remedy solution for various eye conditions. I have looked up some of the health tips for ayurvedic eye wash cups and found a lot of recommendations for using rose water - however I cannot find any medical reasoning for this and I fear it would not be sterile.
